First on the Street with Patriotic Decorations

June 30, 2012

Every patriot holiday around here brings a small version of neighborhood one-upmanship on our cul-de-sac.  The race is not for the best decorations but the FIRST to go up.  Sometimes we get our decorations out first and sometimes we don't.  But this weekend we got our things out first!  Check out the nice banners over the garage doors.  We debated whether they would stay when the doors are lifted but neither one of us wanted to try it first.  We will just have to find out in the morning when we leave for church.  The large flag is out most all nice weather days year round.  Note: The banners stayed up!

Also the front bannister is sporting a red, white & blue bow which matches the larger bow on the front door and the bunting in the transon over the door.  The picture is showing a glare on the glass door so it is not too easy to see them.  The awkard white thing showing on the left in the picture is the gutter.

Usually we line the driveways with small 6-inch flags, but two things kept us from doing it this year. First it is about 105 degrees here in LaVergne today.  Also the ground is too dry to push the flags into the dirt without a lot of effort which would include pouring water on the ground first.  We don't want to do that.

Earlier I had offered them to our choir director so each choir member would have a flag to wave after or during our patriotic song/worship service on Sunday.  So I will clean the dirt off about 35 flags tonight in readiness for the service.  In the afternoon, we may put them out after all!

Oklahoma!

June 29, 2012

My Aunt Nell and Uncle Tommy moved to Collinsville, Oklahoma in April of this year.  They downsized into a three room home in a gated community.  They have a son and daughter in law who live near by.  I think that it was so brave of them to leave a home in Georgia where they had lived for over forty years and had many established friends and church family.  They selflessly ridded themselves of lots of possessions and trusted that this move was best for them.  Uncle Tommy is 94 and Aunt Nell will be 90 in November.

We have bought airline tickets to visit them in August.  Walter and I will be married 24 years on August 27.  We thought a trip to see them would be a wonderful celebration for all of us.  They do not know this, unless they somehow read this blog.  SSHH!  Don't tell them yet.  We will let them know closer to the actual trip.

Neighborhood Ride of Shame

June 28, 2012

I had the "ride of shame" home this morning.  Last night I had a sleep study done with a mask to determine what equipment I needed for my sleep apnea.  Well about 5:50 this morning when I drove into my neighborhood there were two retired people I know sitting in their driveway enjoying their coffee.  Their truck partially hid them from my view.  I am dressed in the T-Shirt that I slept in and my hair is wild due to the remains of the gum like substance that was used to hold on the electrodes that enabled the monitoring of my sleep patterns.
What a doozie of a morning look for me!  If they saw me I am guessing that they assumed that I was cheating on Walter and was just trying to get into the house before he woke up.  Actually I did arrive home before he woke up.  When I told him about my possibility of having the neighbors suspicious of my early morning moves, he said "I can't wait until the phone call I will get!"  What a good husband!  And what a chuckle we had about my early morning escapades.
