Early Morning Wedding

Walter and I were invited to a wedding.  Most everyone we know can attest that we love weddings.  We had no idea we were in for such a treat.  This wedding was different from any others we have attended.  First it was held @ 8:30 am.  And if that wasn't odd enough, it was held at a local school cafeteria.

The happy couple was also young - in fact they were six years old!  Say what?  Yes, they were young.  The bride was the letter "U" and the groom was the letter "Q".  We did know the groom as he was our grandson Kash.
The Principal Conducted the "Wedding" of Q & U
I thought it must be a social studies lesson.  I was close.  It was a spelling lesson.  You see the letters Q & U always go together.  The ingenuous teacher, along with a few volunteer parents, had staged a mock wedding of the two letters. This will be a lesson that none of the participants or guests will soon forget.

The Boys were QUarterbacks and the Girls were QUeens
Kash and the bride were randomly selected to play the Bride and Groom roles.  The funny thing was that these two have been close friends for a long time, so the pairing was easy for everyone.

Linking Arms Leaving the Ceremony
Kash got to wear his suit and the other boys dressed as Quarterbacks.  The girls all wore either brides outfits or Queen/Princess garb.  The kindergartners left the ceremony in pairs and led the guests into their classroom.  A reception had been prepared for those in attendance.  A table just for the Bride and Groom was also prepared.

Several parents and grandparents were invited to the wedding.  Since being retired, we now have the valuable gift of time to be part of these kinds of events.  I wish more parents could have the flexibility to be part of their child's school activities.

The Reception Table
This kindergarten room looks like it is designed for learning in a fun way.  On the board were many words that were started with the QU letter combination, such as Quarterbacks, Queens, Quit, Quiver, Quart, etc.

The classmates were all so polite and kind to each other.  The teacher had all of the boys and girls pose for a group shot.  Every parent wanted a memory of this gala.

Kash and his friend were real troupers that morning.  They posed for many pictures and received all their guests in the most gracious of ways.

Great Smiles Between the Couple At the Days End
Walter and I had a blast at the kindergarten this day.  We even laughed that maybe we should show some of these pictures years from now at his REAL wedding day.  Kash was so grown up and we were so proud of him.  We were also proud of his mother, Brandy, who had also worked with the teacher to pull off this fine event.

All the attendees of this mock wedding will remember this lesson, probably for the rest of their lives.  It was so unique a way to teach the QU connection.

Cactus Confusion

The weather has been so warm that our Thanksgiving cactus has gotten confused.  Just a few days ago it set on flowers.  To produce flowers twice in a year is unusual I believe.

Two Unexpected Blooms

My Daughter, Patricia, Gave This Cactus to Me Years Ago

The beautiful blooms in April were as striking as the ones we had in the fall last year.
I don't have much of a green thumb so to have them appear unexpectantly was a total joy.

Close-Up of the Brillant Flowers
I remember my own mother taking her cactus down into the basement for weeks prior to moving them upstairs for the proper light so they would bloom.  She tended to them with loving care.  I just water them occasionally and try to never move them from the center of our living room where they apparently have the right mixture of sunlight, dry soil and love.,  Aren't I the lucky girl?

Rain and Inactivity - No Baseball Games

We had rain for almost the entire day.  The grandchildren had baseball games planned for today but the rains prevented us from having them. Baseball games are scheduled often for us as we have three grandchildren playing on three different teams and on two different fields.  When the games are scheduled at the same time, we really have to manage our time between them.

The rain also prevented us from going outside for any other activities either.  We have lots of yard work that did not get done today.  Instead we washed clothes, read, studied our Sunday School lessons, watched television, knitted, cooked an oatmeal cake, and worked puzzles.  That was entirely too much sitting.  We need to get up and move!

Tomorrow we will try to be more active.  In the meantime we looked at pictures from Brandon's last baseball game.

Brandon is very good at listening to his coaches and trying with all his might to follow their instructions.  He also listens from the field to his father's tips too.

Austin Gets A Boot

The first baseball game of this season our twelve year old grandson Austin got to pitch.  He told us several weeks ago that he would be a pitcher this year and he was so excited.  The excitement rose as he walked onto the pitcher’s mound.  His parents and grandparents were both anxious and supportive.  He was very good on the mound and the game was 6-2 his team’s favor, in part because he was not allowing many players to get on base.  Then he was replaced with another pitcher and the team ended up losing the game.  The replacing of a pitcher is common practice in this league so that the player can be used again in the next game.

Several people mentioned to me that Austin had matured and that this year was going to be his year in sports!
Imagine our sorrow when he told his parents that during batting practice he was having terrible pains in his foot.  A trip to the podiatrist resulted in a diagnosis of Sever’s Apophysitis.  The most prominent symptom of Sever's disease is heel pain which is usually aggravated by physical activity such as walking, running or jumping. The pain is localized to the posterior and plantar side of the heel.  Sometimes, the pain may be so severe that it may cause limping and interfere with physical performance in sports. The external appearance of his heel is normal.  The main problem seems to be in his growth plate.  He is just growing too fast.

Austin Wearing His Boot
The good news is Sever’s disease is self-recovering, meaning that it will go away on its own when the foot is used less or when the bone is through growing. The condition is not expected to create any long-term disability, and expected to subside in 2–8 weeks.  The disease may also take several years to stop, because it is often triggered by growing too fast. It is more common in boys in the 9 to 11 age bracket.

So Austin is now in a boot to hold the foot in place for the next 3 weeks.  He is to do no sports at all and is not to get the foot wet either.  It is sad for him, as his pitching career is sidelined for the time being.  Three weeks is a long time to wait when you are twelve and are the first string pitcher of your local team.
Have patience Austin.  Your day will return.  God is good.

Easter on a Cold Day

Although it was a cold day in Middle Tennessee on Sunday, we still had 571 people in the Easter service.  Our normal attendance hovers around 300, so this was exciting for sure.  Chairs had to be put into the foyer hall to accommodate everyone.  Walter and I sang in the musical "Arise, My Love".  We had practiced for weeks and the actual performance was moving, even to the choir members.  When the man portraying Jesus walked though the crowd, several of us were wiping tears away and trying to keep on singing as well.  Our church family is so very close to us.  We were united in the emotion of the morning.

After Sunday school, we came home to finish the details of providing an Easter dinner for our family.  They had all attended their churches and gathered at our house afterwards.  We made a 12 pound glazed ham and peach cobbler as well as several vegetables and a fruit bowl.  The girls all made dishes and we filled our plates nicely.

The rest of this post is picture heavy.  Due to the cold weather, every thing we did was inside the house.  My daughter, Patricia, has told me several times that the egg hunt inside the house instead of outside was her favorite of her childhood.

Due to the cold and wet weather, we decided to hunt the Easter eggs upstairs in the bonus room.

After the grandchildren emptied their eggs of the candy and money, they sent the adults downstairs so they could hide the eggs for us.   They found some harder places to hide the eggs for us.  A couple of grandchildren brought me eggs for my basket, (you know who you are).  I guess they had pity on me or thought I was too slow.  I don't know but it felt wonderful to have them love me in that way.

Then we all gathered in the bonus room for stories, pool games and air hockey games.  I played with Kash and Nola.  They were perfect competitors and had very good sportsmanship.  We played until one of us had three pucks in the table.  Then we changed out players.

After everyone left, I realized that Walter took all the pictures this day, therefore we have no pictures of him.  Sorry!

As with all times together, we were left with too much food.  Who can eat that much ham?  We will eat a few meals and then freeze the leftover ham for later meals.   Thankfully both of us were raised to enjoy leftover ham cooked with pinto beans.  With it we add cornbread and it takes us back to flavors of our childhood.

I had a great time.  I believe the family enjoyed their time with us on this cold day.  Maybe one of them will think back and say this was a favorite Easter for them when we hid the eggs inside.

WMU Conference

Recently I attended the Tennessee WMU Conference held in Gatlinburg, which is held on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  I have attended each year for about four years now.  I love the encouragement and refreshment that I receive.  We get to meet home and foreign missionaries and hear their stories and experiences.  The speakers are first rate.  This year 1,400 plus women attended.
A View of the Sunday Morning Worship Service
I was tired going into this trip and ended up sleeping in the back seat of the car for about half the way there.  My friends, Juanice and Billie, went with me and Linda and Barbara joined us there.  We take in as many conferences as we can and also the worship services held in the evening.

Juanice and Billie Wait for the Evening Service to Begin
On Saturday afternoon we had a break between conferences and the evening service.  My sister Jean, and her husband, Edd, met me at our motel and took me into Pigeon Forge for dinner.  Due to heavy traffic, we spent most of that time in the van. We had a good visit, ate dinner at the Golden Corral, and then drove back into Gatlinburg.  It was a very hurried visit but I was glad to have the three hours together and they got me back to the convention center just in time for the evening worship service.

Here are some pictures that we did in the van.

We just bought a new camera the day before the trip so I did not have time to practice all the features available to me.  I knew that we would not be able to stop for taking good pictures so I snapped a few quick shots.  The quality is not very good but it does document the trip.

On Sunday we got a few more shots back at the WMU Conference.

I was tired going into this trip and we stayed so busy that I slept in the back seat for about half of the way home.  Do you notice a pattern here?

I had a good time with the family and the ladies at the conference.  I was also glad to get back home to Walter and my usual routines.

Nephew John-Philip Visits

This past week we hosted our nephew, John-Philip, as he moved from Las Vegas to Pennsylvania. He is a singer and entertainer.  After his Las Vegas contract was over, he packed his worldly goods up and drove through Amarillo and into Tennessee to visit his Tennessee grandmother and us on his way to Pennsylvania.  He is moving to Pennsylvania because he is on contract through 2013 with The American Music Theatre.   He has earned rolls in two musicals that he will headline in between now and the Christmas season.

His original plan was to spend one night in Amarillo, one night outside Memphis and one night with us.  By the time he reached our house, he was so tired that he crashed for about four hours until Walter came home.

He woke then and we went to Murfreesboro to pick up his grandmother, who he calls Gran.  The four of us drove over to Pei Wei for supper and a short visit.  John-Philip wanted no more time with his hands on the wheel.  I understood.

We reached home and the night was spent with Walter and him going through old pictures and the retelling of family stories and history.  I think they even played some games on the Wii.  I retired upstairs for bed and they stayed up late.  I drifted to sleep with the sounds of laughter coming from downstairs.

The following day, John-Philip decided to stay over one more night.  I was glad.  It has been a long time since any young people have slept over.  It was good to have a lively person living among us again, if only for a short time.  He spent the day with Gran seeing other family members and them doing his wash together.  What a nice grandmother!

He returned home in the early evening and we set about to prepare supper.  We decided to make homemade pizzas.  Everyone worked over the crusts until each was satisfied with the results.  We spent lots of time at the supper table catching up with each other.

He left out early on Friday.  A friend in Murfreesboro was making him a big ole country breakfast to send him off full.  Hurray!  I drove out of the driveway just behind him.  I was headed to the three-day weekend WMU Conference held in Gatlinburg.

A full week of fun and remembrance - God is Good!
